Canicross is cross-country running with your dog. The dog runs in front of you in a harness, attached to a belt around your hips by an elastic (bungee) line, and you run as a team over forest paths, fields and hills. It is one of the easiest dog sports to start, needs no special facility, and is excellent exercise for both ends of the line.

## What is canicross?

The [Belgian Canicross Federation (BCF)](https://cani-cross.be/voorstelling/?ref=dogsports.be) puts it simply: canicross is a discipline where a runner and a dog form a team, connected by an elastic line, and try to complete a cross-country course as fast as possible while respecting the dog's limits. Course distances in Belgium range from short races of up to about 3 km to long versions of 5 to 8 km. The fastest teams, the BCF says, exceed 25 km/h.

Canicross sits within a family of dryland mushing sports, which grew out of sled-dog training without snow. Related disciplines include:

- **Bikejöring:** the dog pulls a mountain bike rider.
- **Dog scooter:** the dog pulls a kick scooter (usually one or two dogs).
- **Cani-trail:** canicross over longer trail-running distances.
- **Cani-hiking:** a walking version, often run as a recreational event.

## How a race works

Under the BCF's approach:

- Races usually have **individual starts**, with teams set off at intervals, but **mass starts** also happen.
- The dog must **run in front of** the runner. Pulling your dog back to gain speed, or to punish it, is forbidden.
- Dogs must be **under control** at all times, and aggression between dogs must be avoided. On narrow paths, overtaking etiquette matters.
- There are **age categories** for runners, including children's races on adapted courses.
- A **vet check** is part of BCF competitions. The federation publishes guidance for it on its [documents page](https://cani-cross.be/documenten/?ref=dogsports.be).

The BCF publishes its full rulebook for canicross, bikejöring and scooter each season on its [documents page](https://cani-cross.be/documenten/?ref=dogsports.be). The 2026 version is there now. Read it before your first race.

## Which dogs suit canicross?

Most healthy, fit, medium to large dogs that like to run will enjoy canicross. The BCF says the dog may be **with or without a pedigree, of any breed or size**, but must be in good health, be up to date with its vaccinations, and be **older than 1 year** to race. You, in turn, should be medically fit to run.

Points to consider:

- **Growing dogs:** don't do structured running training with puppies. Many vets advise waiting until the growth plates have closed, which happens later in large breeds. Ask your vet before you start.
- **Heat:** dogs overheat much faster than people. Run early or late in summer, choose shade and water, and don't run at all in hot weather.
- **Flat-faced breeds** and dogs with heart, breathing or joint problems need a vet's opinion first.
- **Temperament:** a dog that lunges at other dogs will find a crowded start stressful, though individual starts help.

## Equipment

The BCF lists the basics: the dog wears a **harness suitable for canicross**, connected to the runner by an **elastic line of at most 2 m**. **Choke and prong collars are forbidden.** A suitable muzzle may be allowed in some cases.

In practice you need:

- **A running harness for the dog:** designed for pulling, so the load spreads over the chest and not the throat. Fit matters more than brand.
- **A canicross belt for you:** a padded waist belt or a hip harness with leg loops.
- **A bungee line:** the elastic absorbs shocks for both of you.
- **Trail shoes with good grip:** you will be pulled downhill.

The BCF's advice is worth repeating: don't buy the first thing you see. Talk to people who already do canicross, and try their kit on before you buy.

## How to start training

### 1\. Build the running base

If you or your dog are new to running, start with walk-run intervals on soft ground, for example 1 minute running and 2 minutes walking, three times a week. Build up gradually over several weeks.

### 2\. Teach "in front"

Your dog must run ahead of you, not beside or behind. Start in a harness on the line, with a helper or a toy ahead to encourage forward movement. Reward your dog for keeping the line taut.

### 3\. Directional cues

Teach simple words for left, right, straight on, slow down and stop. The classic mushing cues ("gee", "haw", "easy", "whoa") work well, but any clear words will do. Start at a walk at path junctions, then use them on runs.

### 4\. Leave it and pass

Practise passing other dogs, joggers and cyclists with a "leave it" cue and a reward, so you can overtake safely in a race.

### 5\. Recovery

Give your dog water, a cool-down walk and a rest day after hard sessions. Check its paws, especially on gravel or forest tracks.

## Canicross in Belgium

### The Belgian Canicross Federation (BCF / FCB)

Canicross racing in Belgium is organised by the [**Belgische Canicross Federatie / Fédération de Canicross Belge (BCF-FCB)**](https://cani-cross.be/?ref=dogsports.be). Its races cover **canicross, bikejöring and scooter**. Since 2024 the federation has also run official **cani-trail** races, in three formats: introduction (8–12 km), short (13–23 km) and long (24–35 km). Details are on its [cani-trail page](https://cani-cross.be/cani-trail/?ref=dogsports.be).

**Licence or day entry:** to race, you either take out the annual **BCF licence** or pay a higher entry fee per race. The licence is an annual subscription that includes insurance for competitions and training, plus reduced race fees. You need a valid licence for internationally recognised races and for Belgian, European and World championships. Current prices for adults, children and families are on the [membership page](https://cani-cross.be/lidmaatschap/?ref=dogsports.be). They change from season to season, so check there.

**Calendar:** the [BCF calendar](https://cani-cross.be/wedstrijden?ref=dogsports.be) runs through most of the year, with races hosted by member clubs across Flanders and Wallonia. The 2026 calendar, for example, included the **Belgian Championship (Bike)** at Kruibeke in October and a **Federation Championship (Scooter)** at Waasmunster in November. Check the calendar for current dates.

**Clubs:** the BCF publishes a [list of clubs](https://cani-cross.be/clubs/?ref=dogsports.be) where you can discover the sport and train. It currently includes clubs around Brussels, Liège, Mons, Namur, Maldegem, Kruibeke, Waasmunster, Genk, Wemmel, Overijse and elsewhere. Joining a club is the best way to borrow kit, learn the cues and find training partners.

**Try it first:** the BCF also invites newcomers to come and watch a race. The BCF fee table also includes a "Fun" category with a lower entry fee.

The other Belgian federations featured on this site, VOE and DSAB, do not organise canicross according to their websites. Canicross in Belgium runs through the BCF and its clubs.

## Canicross and other sports

Canicross is a great way to build fitness for other dog sports. A fit, well-conditioned dog is less likely to get injured in agility or flyball. See our guide on [fitness and injury prevention for agility dogs](https://dogsports.be/en/agility-fitness-and-injury-prevention/), or read [What Is Dog Agility?](https://dogsports.be/en/what-is-dog-agility/) if you want a sport that adds handling skills to the running. For more ideas, see the [dog sports overview](https://dogsports.be/en/dog-sports-overview/).
